FAQ
What is Monolith?
Monolith is how artists protect themselves by making it impossible for their work to be used without attribution. By attaching a digital Mark to their work that can’t be stripped, cropped, or ignored by AI, artists have the proof they need to take credit for everything they create.
How does Monolith work?
Every file ever created has a unique fingerprint. On Monolith every artist sets up a Mark — your own creative identity that carries your custom details. We capture only the fingerprint from any file you upload, associate it with your Mark, and the content of that file is now permanently linked to your chosen identity, in the form of an Artifact. Anywhere that content is shared, the information included in your Mark is preserved, and available for anyone in the world to discover.
What file formats are supported?
Monolith works with all the most widely used file types (except GIF). If you’re working with something we don’t currently support, reach out — we’re always happy to add it.
Is Monolith private?
Yes. Monolith identifies content using only its fingerprint. Your file never leaves your device unless you choose to share the content publicly.
If someone else owns the IP to the work I create, can I still use Monolith?
Yes. A Mark is about authorship, not ownership. Monolith identifies files by their fingerprint without sharing the file itself, so there’s no NDA risk. Adobe, Google, Microsoft and others already do this; Monolith is the only platform that lets you, the creator, customize the information associated with the content.
Can I mark work I’ve already made?
Absolutely. You can Mark any file regardless of when it was made — there’s no time limit on taking credit for what you’ve created. The easiest way is the Monolith desktop app pointed at your archive.
What happens if someone tries to fingerprint content I’ve already Marked?
Monolith recognizes the fingerprint as already associated with an existing Artifact and refuses to create a second one. Every piece of unique content traces back to one Mark — first writer wins.
Can I delete an Artifact?
No. Artifacts are permanent and can’t be deleted or modified in any way (other than to remove the visibility of the raw content).
What if someone creates an Artifact with my content?
Artifacts make no claim on ownership. The best protection is to Mark all your work at the moment it’s created, and at every stage of the creative process — that prevents anyone else from creating an Artifact for files you’ve already Marked. The desktop app does this automatically.
What is the Monolith desktop app?
The desktop app is the fastest way to create Artifacts for every file you modify or save. It watches any folders you choose and creates Artifacts in the background, so you’re always protected without thinking about it.
If I cancel my subscription, will I lose my Artifacts?
No. Artists who use Monolith are protected forever. Artifacts are permanent and not tied to any subscription. You keep your profile and all existing Artifacts.
What is a C2PA manifest, and how does Monolith use it?
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is the global standard for certifying the origin and history of digital content. Every Artifact you create on Monolith carries a C2PA manifest, ensuring your work is recognized by major players adopting the standard, including Google, Microsoft, Sony, Adobe and OpenAI.
